How Much RAM and CPU Does Your VDS Need?

Take a service inventory first

List the operating system, web server, application, database, queue workers, panel, and monitoring tools. If they will all run on the same server, consider memory allocations together. Also measure peak usage for periodic tasks such as compiling or generating reports.

Idle RAM is initial data, not a capacity limit. During peak hours, it is necessary to see the behavior while taking a backup and restarting the application. Using swaps does not make lack of RAM acceptable in every workload.

CPU intensive job and waiting job are different

Visual processing or data conversion can constantly use the CPU. A service that expects an external API response may be limited by connection and memory management. Multiple vCPUs do not speed up every task running on a single thread at the same rate.

Interpret CPU usage along with application latency. If there is slowness when CPU is low, database locks, disk or external services may be investigated. High CPU alone does not tell you which package you should buy.

Add growth allowance to disk account

Space is required for existing files, database, logs, update files and temporary jobs. Backups kept on the same server can quickly fill the disk. Keep the master copy of the backup in an independent location.

For example, 20 GB application/data, 5 GB system/log and 10 GB growth space account equals 35 GB. This is just an example of capacity planning; Package adequacy cannot be concluded without measuring actual usage of your operating system and application.

With what measurements do you make capacity decisions?

• Application response time and error rate during peak hours.
• CPU saturation, memory pressure and process restarts.
• Database query time and pending job queue.
• Disk usage increase and disk access latency.
• Latency of network traffic and external services.
